Thousands of aggrieved Asaba women in Oshimili South local government
area of Delta State yesterday took to various streets in Asaba,
including the Asagba of Asaba’s palace and the government house, to
protest what they described as “inhuman treatment” allegedly meted out
to one of their daughters, Mrs Mariam Nnemeka Ali, in a squabble which
ensued between her and the state PDP chairman, Peter Nwaoboshi.
It would be recalled that the fight ensued last Friday between Mrs
Mariam Ali, a Board of Trustee Member (BOT) and a senatorial aspirant of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nwaoboshi, over inexplicable
differences, which lead to physical altercation where both allegedly
exchanged blows.
At the palace of the Asagba, the protesters said that it was a
monumental taboo for a married Asaba woman to be beaten up in Asaba
without regard for the peoples mores.
They stated that it was an act that in the past would have resulted
in an inter-community war, but stressed they do not want to go to war
with the people of Ibusa where Nwaoboshi hails from.
